More rain

On Sunday night we had another smallish rain storm, and got a bout 1/2 inch over 6-8 hours.  Not much by any standard but enough to get everything thoroughly wet and create large puddles in the basement.

We were more prepared this time and were able to mitigate the water quickly.  Last time, we swept the water around the basement with brooms, which didn’t work that great.  In anticipation of more rain, I ordered some large floor squeegees.

The upper two floors already drained pretty well with all the holes we drilled after the previous rain, which put all the water into the basement.  We moved the water in the basment into the elevator pit with the squeegees, and used a pump to pull it out.  We then used a shop vac to vacuum up the water from the places that were harder to get to.  The end results was the structure was pretty dry after just an hour.

Once we are dried in, we plan on spraying some bleach on anywhere that looks like a possible mold suspect.

I am probably more paranoid than I need to be, but we have a local horror story about mold in construction, the Bacara Resort, which was apparently built during a particularly wet year, and in a hurried fashion, such that they didn’t let the wood dry out before it was closed in, resulting in almost the entire resort having mold issue, which they have been slowly remedying over time (at great expense I am sure).
