More plumbing issues, oh my

Unfortunately, we discovered a rash of new plumbing issues this week.  The first, and potentially most serious, is an issue with our sump pump.

The sump pump is hooked up to two lines.  One goes to the vent (to get air behind water to allow it to flow) and the other, the outlet.  It seems that the plumbers hooked them up backwards.  When we tried to test the sump pump, nothing came out.  As it turns out, it was attempting to pump it 35 feet up to the roof; the sump pump has head pressure that will go up 15 feet.  As we are expecting our first rain, this could be a serious issue if water from the perimeter drains around our foundation can’t be pumped out.

Here is the after.

The second is one of out toilets is leaking from the bottom.

At some point we noticed this toilet was not level and ask the plumber to fix it.  Apparently, what he did was simply raise it up on one side and screw it down again. The problem is, at that point, the wax ring that seals the toilet to the sewer line had already been compressed lower, so when he raised the toilet up, it created a gap between either the ring and the toilet, or the ring and the floor.  The solution was simply to reinstall the toilet with a new wax ring.  A simple fix, for another problem that should have never happened.

Last, one of our sinks seems to have a leak underneath.

This one worries me the most as who knows how long it has been undetected, and whether or not mold has started to grow.

If you’ll recall, after our plumbing leak, we had an another plumber come out to inspect everything that was visible, and he discovered about 20 additional items that were done incorrectly.  This was in addition to the issues we discovered on our own (reverse osmosis unit connect for some strange reason to the salt tank of the water softener so only salty water came out, water softener didn’t have its resin beads installed, so was doing nothing).

To say we are concerned is putting it mildly.  We can only hope that nothing else major crops up.
