{"id":927,"date":"2017-09-26T07:49:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T15:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/?p=927"},"modified":"2017-09-26T08:43:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-26T16:43:16","slug":"down-comes-the-wall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/26\/down-comes-the-wall\/","title":{"rendered":"Down comes the wall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had this existing wall on the property, a short segment that was skewed relative to the property line.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-928\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Existing-wall-2-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Existing-wall-2-1280x960.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Existing-wall-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Existing-wall-2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We decided along with our neighbors that we liked the style, and wanted to tear down the existing wall and replicate the style all along the property line.\u00a0 Yesterday was the day it came down, and its destruction revealed just how poorly it was built.\u00a0 Given a modest earthquake, it could easily have entirely fallen down and crushed someone that happened to be standing next to it.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, it was built on what appears to be a curb like footing, which was only about 12 inches deep and 9 inches wide.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-929\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6448-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6448-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6448-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was no tie in into the footing.\u00a0 Normally, you would have re-bar coming out of the footing and tied into the interior voids of the bricks, which would then be filled with mortar, tying the entire structure together.<\/p>\n<p>The bricks weren&#8217;t even aligned with all the voids in the same direction;
