{"id":238,"date":"2016-05-10T17:04:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T01:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/?p=238"},"modified":"2016-05-10T18:07:49","modified_gmt":"2016-05-11T02:07:49","slug":"excavation-is-complete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/index.php\/2016\/05\/10\/excavation-is-complete\/","title":{"rendered":"Excavation is complete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Excavation took about twice as long as expected due to all the rocks we encountered.\u00a0 The amount of rock (beautiful, valuable, Santa Barbara sandstone) was just astounding.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t realize (despite seeing the huge pile grow) how much rock we pulled out until we did a rough estimation of the weight of all the rock we excavated &#8211; x 8&#8242; and the second largest was 8&#8242; x 6&#8242;.\u00a0 We had a couple of dozen rocks ranging between 4&#8242; and 6&#8242; and probably a hundred or more in the 3&#8242; range.\u00a0 We are going to use this rock to do the stonework on the house and the hardscape walls on the property.<\/p>\n<p>By any standard, the excavated hole is big.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-240\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_6203-1024x367.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6203\" width=\"730\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_6203-1024x367.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_6203-300x108.jpg 300w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_6203-768x275.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To the eye, it actually looked bigger before they added back soil on the bottom.\u00a0 The idea is to have equal compaction of soil all around the property so that any settling will happen equally everywhere, rather than in a soft spot.\u00a0 To do this, they over-excavate by an additional 3&#8242;, and then add the (well-sifted) soil back in and compact it down.<\/p>\n<p>At every step, a soils engineer tests the soil to make sure all is well.\u00a0 When the hole was about 2\/3 of its finished size, it reached a maximum of 15&#8242;, which made it look simply huge.\u00a0 Now that 3&#8242;
