But first, we needed to figure out exactly what we had, and determine what we would have to add to it to make it good growing soil.<\/p>\n<p>We learned a net trick from our local botanical gardens.\u00a0 Taking a scoop of dirt in a jar, then filling with water, we shook it violently until all the dirt has broken up and was well distributed in the water.\u00a0 Then we set it upright and let it settle.\u00a0 How the dirt settles indicates the percentage of sand, silt, and clay.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2232\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"973\" srcset=\"http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-768x1024.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-225x300.jpeg 225w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, http:\/\/buildingfromscratch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_1683-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lines are a little hard to discern, but based on the rate at which things settled, I think the above does a pretty good job of showing the percentages of each, about 25% sand, 65% silt, and 10% clay.\u00a0 All-in-all soil is pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>However, and importantly, it isn&#8217;t top soil, meaning, it is effectively dead soil with little to no microbes that are necessary for the healthy breakdown of nutrients necessary for plants to grow.\u00a0 To make our soil active, we plan on mixing it with about 50% organic mulch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We planned on using some of the dirt from our pool excavation to fill our garden beds.
