The craftsman style was less about being opulent and more about showing off the talents of the craftsmen doing the work.\u00a0 As such, it is common for craftsman houses to have some interesting details where things don’t quite work perfectly, but are done in an interesting way.\u00a0 Charlie the builder calls this the perfection of imperfection.\u00a0 I call this the funky craftsman style.<\/p>\n

We have some good examples of this in the house.\u00a0 For example, rather than trying to insure that every door casing has the perfect amount of space, we’ve embraced the fact that some casing won’t, and we just go with it.<\/p>\n

Here is a place where the beams interact\u00a0 with the window casing in interesting ways.<\/p>\n

Here is a place where the casing for two doors join.<\/p>\n

Here is the same thing where the tops of two doors with touching casing are offset.<\/p>\n

In this particular case, the offset is caused by the garage slab being 6 inches higher than the main floor of the house, something that was required for structural reasons.<\/p>\n

Lastly, the funkiness is well on display with this downspout going through a half-moon cut in the stone.<\/p>\n
